Science And The Gospel.

US President-elect Barack Obama stated in his weekly radio and video address “Today, more than ever before, science holds the key to our survival as a planet and our security and prosperity as a nation”. Mr Obama’s comments made in connection with a much publicised commitment to fight alleged man-made global warming, reflect the views of many across the world. Sadly, they are unbiblical and wrong.
A brief glance at the scriptures shows just how mistaken these views are.
Firstly, the Bible teaches that this world will not continue forever. Peter wrote (2Pet.3:10) of a coming day when “the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” John wrote (Rev.21:1) of “a new heaven and a new earth : for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away” Neither political rhetoric nor ultra green policies can alter the biblical reality - this world is doomed.
Secondly, the Scriptures reveal that for as long as the Lord permits this world to continue recognisable seasons will be its portions. Gen.8:22 is clear “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Climate change scaremongering should not shake the Christian from his confidence in God’s word. What God has written he will perform. The scriptures cannot be broken.
Finally the security and prosperity of man depends on His God not science. It is God who will either bless us or curse us. He alone holds the keys to the treasure house of true prosperity. Man deludes himself when he believes that he can flourish without God. Study well the description the Psalmist pens of man without God. It is found in Ps.10:4-10 “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net. He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.” This not a picture of prosperity but rather a nightmare vision of human depravity. Such is the reality of man without God.
Dear reader, the Gospel shows us a better way. Jesus said “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly”. Do not concern yourself with the “words without knowledge” of politicians but do take a care for the welfare of your soul. This day, repent and believe the gospel. Seek the Lord while he may be found and call upon him for salvation while he is near.
